1987 Footpaths Survey
In 1987, the group carried out its first rights of way survey. Under the direction of Ian Reese, many members noted the condition of the footpaths during the evening walks in the Rhiwderin and Michaelstone areas. In a subsequently issued report, our experiences were described as jungle warfare.
Further surveys of rights of way in 1988 in the Bettws-Newydd area and in 1989 and Llanellen/Llanover area of the BPNP showed these paths to be largely unsignposted, with virtually no waymarks and half to two-thirds of paths obstructed with at least one problem.
Taken together, these three surveys indicated that approximately 1500 miles of footpaths in Gwent were in need of attention. They provided essential evidence for the footpath restoration programme which followed and the benchmark from which to measure progress.
